Benefits of Using Himalayan Salt On The Skin

Is there anything Himalayan salt can’t do? Most of us know that adding a Himalayan Salt lamp to our spaces not only adds a beautiful and calming aesthetic, it also helps to purify the air we breathe in. However, few of us know the benefits of using Himalayan salt on the skin.

1. Salt Soap Is Good For Skin Exfoliating

The salt is added at trace and nicely exfoliates the skin when you decide to felt it or just use a washcloth. Enough of the salt comes off onto the washcloth to help exfoliate the skin; removing dead skin cells and leaving your skin more youthful and glowing.

2. Use Salt Soap Every Day To Balance Natural Oils

Salt bars must be formulated differently in order to not crumble because of the salt. This insures that they have a higher super fat content. Skin is not stripped, but gently exfoliated and nourished at the same time.

3. Rub Salt On Your Skin for Detoxing

Salts help to draw impurities from the skin, making for a wonderfully detoxing skin routine that doesn’t require a salt bath to accomplish.

4. Does Salt Soap Dry Out Skin?

No. Salt is "hydrophilic" meaning it attracts water. Many people who have not used salt bars think that they will dry the skin because of the salt content, but I have not found this to be true…and I battled dry skin daily before using a handmade salt bar. Salt ions can interact with lipids (i.e. the sebum and other fatty acids that make up your skin's natural oils). At very high concentrations salt can cause lipid oxidation (i.e. breakdown) but with the concentrations found in salt soap bars it acts more like a stabilizer. Our salt soap bar is formulated with saponified organic oils in the proper ratio to derive only the benefits of salt.

5. Unscented Salt Soap is Best For Acne

High-glycemic foods are a principal contributor but not often discussed cause of acne. The idea is that "carbs" trigger insulin which in turn stimulates the sebaceous glands leading to excess sebum. Ideally your diet would not be overstimulating the production of sebum. Other hormones and any causes of inflammation are factors contributing to acne outbreaks. While it is important to address the root causes, some people have seen amazing results with their acne after switching to a natural salt bar. I believe this is a result of all of the benefits listed so far - that salt helps to gently exfoliate the skin, while detoxing and helping to balance the oils - and the fact that salt is a natural antibacterial.

(I'll talk more about this and other salt soap benefits further below.)

6. Salt is a Natural Antimicrobial

In general, bacteria that thrive in a non-salty environment will be harmed by salt. If not - like certain strains of Staphylococcus - they are called halotolerant. These bacteria are often found in saline environments like salt lakes, coastal regions, and soil with high salt content. Salt works by creating an inhospitable environment for certain bacteria. It can reduce swelling and inflammation further creating less opportunity for harmful bacteria to thrive. The big idea here is that salt is not a "kills everything" antibacterial - which we now recognize is a good thing. Preserving your skin's microbiome is as important to your skin health as "germ killing".

7. Salt Soap Creates a Creamy Lather

Because salt soap reduces surface tension of water differently than traditional soap, Salt soap end up having a denser, creamy lather rather than a big bubble lather. This gives you a luxurious, lotion-like feel as you are washing.

8. Natural Salt Contains Trace Elements & Minerals Beneficial For The Skin

Beyond sodium-chloride (i.e. salt), both Sea Salt and Himalayan Salt contain many trace elements and minerals; primarily magnesium, potassium, iodine, calcium, copper and zinc. The pink to orange color of Himalayan Salt comes from trace amounts of iron oxide - what normal people call 'rust'. Iron oxide is commonly found in makeup and skincare products and, though likely in much higher concentrations than found in Himalayan Salt, is generally considered safe for all skin types, can improve melasma (darker skin patches), and can give your skin a natural glow. Copper can help with production of collagen and elastin - although its not clear if the form of copper in the these salts can be absorbed deeply enough by the skin to be effective.

9. In Some Cases Salt Helps Reduce Inflammation

The combination of minerals, oils, and salt can help relieve water retention, helping reduce inflammation in legs, as well as other problem areas. While it is not clear if simply washing your face with salt soap will have this effect, research have shown that bathing in a solution with an elevated concentration of salt can ease inflammation.
