Essential Oils Safely Bring the Scents of Fall & Christmas Into Your Home
Many of us have traditions during the holiday seasons! Some that come from our distant ancestors, while others, maybe you’ve created this year! One our family created is going out to eat and seeing a movie the day before Thanksgiving. It started a few years back, and now I look forward to it every year!
Most candles are artificially fragranced and release VOCs.
Something I looked forward to every holiday season was stocking up on scented candles. Holiday fragrances have a unique way of evoking comfort and nostalgia, so I, like many, would load up on cozy scents from the store. However, in recent years, research has shown that these artificially scented candles can harm indoor air quality, releasing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that affect people differently. Some concerning VOCs found in scented candles include benzene, toluene, formaldehyde, and acetone. Additionally, the wax used in a candle can come into question. Sometimes it’s unclear what ingredients are in the wax and if it’s clean to burn. As a result, many have started moving away from store-bought scented candles.
If you’re like me and miss that holiday warmth brought by seasonal scents, here are a few essential oils you might enjoy diffusing this year!
For Autumn Essential Oil Scents:
Cinnamon – A warm, spicy fragrance that immediately evokes the feeling of autumn. |
Clove – Spicy and sweet, clove adds a comforting, seasonal aroma. |
Orange – This sweet, citrusy scent is both refreshing and warming, perfect for fall |
For Christmas Essential Oil Scents:
Fir Needle – Crisp and woodsy, this evergreen scent brings the outdoors inside. |
Peppermint – Fresh and minty, classic holiday aroma pairs beautifully with other seasonal oils. |
Cinnamon – A Christmas favorite, this warm spice complements other festive aromas. |
How to mix these essential oils to create fall and winter blends!
You can have so much fun mixing and matching the scents above and creating new combinations! To begin, choose these or any other essential oils that accentuate your personal memories of the season. Consider these methods for using essential oils at home:
-
Diffusers
Diffusers gently release essential oils into the air, filling your home with uplifting or calming aromas. Use oils like lavender for relaxation, citrus for energy, or eucalyptus for focus. -
Aromatic Sprays
Create a simple spray for linens, drapes, or upholstery by mixing distilled water with a few drops of your favorite essential oil. A lavender spray on your pillow can enhance restful sleep, while a citrus blend on curtains adds a burst of freshness to your mornings. Make a spray with about 5 drops of essential oil for each ounce of distilled water. A dark colored fine mist spray bottle is preferred.
I feel at ease knowing that we are bringing holiday scents into our home the natural way. Fragrances are a big part of tradition for me, so I’m glad I’ve found a way to continue this in a way that is safe for my family.
Blessings,
