Açaí Palm (Euterpe oleracea) Fruit Oil offers scientifically supported benefits for both skin and hair due to its nutrient-rich composition. Its high content of fatty acids, including oleic and linoleic acids, hydrates the skin and reinforces its barrier, reducing transepidermal water loss (Journal of the American Oil Chemists' Society, 2018). These fatty acids also nourish and moisturize hair, improving elasticity and reducing dryness (Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2017).

The oil’s antioxidants, such as anthocyanins, polyphenols, and vitamin E, combat free radicals to minimize signs of aging, including fine lines and wrinkles (Food Research International, 2011), while protecting skin and scalp from oxidative damage caused by UV exposure and pollution (Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2008; Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity, 2019). Vitamins C and E further enhance hydration and elasticity (International Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2020) and brighten the skin by reducing hyperpigmentation (Dermato-Endocrinology, 2012).

Phytosterols in Açaí oil soothe irritated or sensitive skin by reducing redness and inflammation (Phytotherapy Research, 2016) while maintaining scalp moisture balance. Additionally, its proteins and amino acids strengthen hair strands, reducing breakage and improving overall hair health (Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, 2015). These properties establish Açaí oil as a valuable ingredient in formulations aimed at nourishing and protecting skin and hair.

Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS) is a surfactant commonly used in personal care products for its cleansing and foaming properties. It is often considered milder than Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), potentially causing less skin irritation due to its larger molecular size, which limits penetration into the skin's deeper layers. Unlike Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), ALS is not subjected to ethoxylation during its production, thereby reducing the risk of contamination with 1,4-dioxane, a byproduct of the ethoxylation process and a potential carcinogen. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ammonium_lauryl_sulfate

ALS provides effective cleansing without excessively stripping natural oils, making it suitable for regular use in personal care products. However, it is important to note that both ALS and SLS can cause skin irritation at higher concentrations. (1983). Journal of the American College of Toxicology, 2(5), 1-34.

While ALS is generally considered to have a lower risk of allergic reactions compared to some surfactants, such as Cocamidopropyl Betaine, individual sensitivities can vary. It is advisable for consumers with sensitive skin to perform a patch test when using new products containing ALS.

Also known as Laurel Leaf, Bay Laurel Essential Oil (Laurus nobilis) is steam-distilled from the leaves of the plant and has a strong, spicy-sweet, medicinal aroma with slight camphoraceous notes. Its scent is often described as emotionally uplifting, warming, and centering.

Research on bay laurel oil primarily highlights its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, with limited direct studies on its impact on hair growth and thickness.

Bay laurel oil has demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the production of inflammatory mediators, making it potentially useful for soothing irritated skin or scalp conditions (Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2015). Its antibacterial and antifungal activity has been shown to combat a range of microorganisms, suggesting potential efficacy against scalp infections associated with dandruff or microbial imbalances (Phytotherapy Research, 2012).

While evidence on its effect on scalp circulation is limited, the stimulating properties of bay laurel oil may enhance blood flow, potentially supporting hair follicle nourishment. Additionally, some studies suggest that bay laurel oil can help balance scalp pH, further contributing to overall scalp health. Despite its potential benefits, more robust research is needed to confirm its effects on circulation and hair health.

Behentrimonium chloride is utilized in hair and skin care formulations for its conditioning, detangling, and emollient properties. Its efficacy is attributed to its cationic nature, which facilitates adherence to the negatively charged surfaces of hair and skin (Cosmetics 77). In hair care, behentrimonium chloride serves as an effective conditioning agent. Its cationic charge allows it to neutralize the negative charges on hair fibers, reducing static electricity and enhancing hair smoothness and manageability. This interaction leads to improved detangling and a decrease in hair breakage during combing (Cosmetics 77).

As an emollient in skin care products, behentrimonium chloride forms a protective barrier on the skin's surface, aiding in moisture retention and contributing to skin softness. This barrier function is essential for maintaining skin hydration and integrity (SpecialChem). The compound's ability to coat the hair shaft results in frizz reduction and an overall improvement in hair texture and appearance. This property is particularly beneficial in formulations targeting curly, frizzy, or dry hair types (SpecialChem).

Behentrimonium chloride exhibits compatibility with various formulation types, including sulfate-free products, enhancing its versatility in personal care applications. Derived from plant oils such as rapeseed (canola), it aligns with consumer preferences for biodegradable and eco-friendly ingredients (SpecialChem). While effective, the concentration of behentrimonium chloride in formulations is regulated due to potential irritation at higher levels. The European Union permits its use up to 5% in rinse-off products and up to 3% in leave-on facial creams, ensuring consumer safety when used within these guidelines (IIVS).

In chemistry and biology, "alcohol" refers to a class of organic compounds characterized by the presence of a hydroxyl group (-OH) attached to a carbon atom.

Unlike rubbing alcohol or other forms we normally think of, cetearyl alcohol is a substance that softens, smooths, prevents dehydration of the skin, and is considered safe for most skin types.

It also aids in preventing the seperation of oils and water while adding a smooth, creamy texture. Added olive oil components gives this substance the ability to allow water and oil based ingredients to blend more easily.

100% Pure Clary Sage Essential Oil (Salvia sclarea), steam-distilled from the flowers and leaves of farm-grown plants, is known for its fresh, sweet, herbaceous aroma with floral undertones. It is widely used for its potential to uplift mood, reduce stress, and promote better sleep.

Research suggests that Clary Sage Essential Oil may improve skin health through its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, primarily by regulating sebum production and combating acne-causing bacteria, such as Propionibacterium acnes (Journal of Essential Oil Research, 2017). Its key component, linalyl acetate, has been shown to reduce inflammation and fight bacteria that contribute to skin infections, though more extensive clinical trials are needed to confirm these effects.

Clary sage has also been studied for its potential benefits in women's health. A small study reported that applying a cream containing clary sage oil to the lower abdomen significantly reduced menstrual cramps (Complementary Therapies in Medicine, 2012). Aromatherapy combining clary sage with lavender and rose was found to reduce the severity of menstrual cramps in another study (Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Research, 2013). Additionally, inhaling clary sage oil was shown to lower cortisol levels by 36% and improve thyroid hormone levels in postmenopausal women in a single 2014 study (Journal of Phytotherapy Research, 2014).

The natural phytoestrogens in clary sage may help balance estrogen levels, offering potential support for hormonal health, though further studies are required to substantiate these findings. Another single study suggested that inhaling clary sage oil could improve autonomic function in individuals with PMS (International Journal of Nursing Practice, 2015). While preliminary evidence is promising, further research is essential to fully establish the efficacy and safety of clary sage essential oil in these applications.

Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine is a mild, plant-derived surfactant known for its effective cleansing and foam-boosting properties, while being gentle on skin and hair. Studies have shown that it can reduce irritation caused by harsher surfactants like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) when used in combination, making it ideal for sensitive formulations (Suuronen et al. 286-92). Unlike Cocamidopropyl Betaine, it has a lower risk of allergic reactions due to reduced impurities in its synthesis (Suuronen et al. 286-92).

While extensive research on the environmental effects of Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine is limited, current information suggests that it is generally considered to be of low environmental concern due to its relatively high biodegradability and low toxicity compared to other surfactants, particularly when used in typical concentrations within personal care products.

Frankincense Essential Oil is hydro-distilled from the wildcrafted resin of Boswellia carterii trees, native to the rural landscapes of Somaliland. Valued for its ethereal, woody, balsamic aroma with citrusy top notes, this oil is widely used in skin and hair care products.

Studies indicate that boswellic acid, a key compound in frankincense, can inhibit the production of inflammatory molecules such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes, helping to reduce redness, swelling, and discomfort (Phytotherapy Research, 2011). Research also suggests that topical application of frankincense oil may reduce irritation, improve skin texture, and potentially promote wound healing by stimulating collagen production (Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine, 2013).

Frankincense’s antioxidant properties may protect skin cells from free radical damage, supporting a youthful appearance (Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2010). While evidence is limited, some studies propose that frankincense oil could benefit scalp health and potentially promote hair growth by enhancing blood circulation (BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies, 2015). Although the anti-inflammatory effects of boswellic acid are well-documented, further research is required to fully confirm its specific benefits for skin and hair health.

Hydrolyzed rice protein, a water-soluble derivative obtained through the enzymatic hydrolysis of rice, is incorporated into hair and skin care formulations for its moisturizing and strengthening properties.

In hair care, it enhances volume and improves manageability by forming a protective film on the hair shaft, which reduces friction and increases elasticity (ETprotein). In skin care, hydrolyzed rice protein contributes to moisture retention and skin barrier function, promoting a smoother and more hydrated complexion (Soko Leaf).

Oil from the Simmondsia chinensis seed is a hydrophilic (or "water loving") compound that creates a long-lasting moisture retaining barrier for the skin. With the antioxidants vitamin E and flavoinoids it can help protect the upper layer of the skin from oxidative damage. It is antibacterial and non-clogging making it suitable for both dry and acne-prone skin.

When applied to the hair it creates a shine that is a natural alternative to more common silicone-based shine enhancers. There is scientific evidence that Jojoba oil is beneficial in eczema management. It is also safer, natural, hypoallergenic way to remove makeup, bacteria, and dirt from the face than chemical makeup removers.

Rice bran, a byproduct of rice production, has gained recognition as an eco-friendly source for ingredients in skincare and haircare products. Traditionally used in Japan, its nutrient-rich composition is now supported by scientific research, highlighting its multiple benefits.

Rice Bran Oil contains essential fatty acids, including oleic, linoleic, and palmitic acids, which deeply hydrate the skin, strengthen its barrier, and reduce transepidermal water loss (International Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2021). Linoleic acid is non-comedogenic, helping balance sebum production and preventing clogged pores (Dermatology Research and Practice, 2016), while also hydrating and soothing dry scalps (Clinical, Cosmetic, and Investigational Dermatology, 2018).

Gamma-oryzanol, a unique antioxidant in Rice Bran Oil, combats oxidative stress, improves skin elasticity, and minimizes wrinkles (Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, 2019), while offering mild UV protection (Photochemistry and Photobiology, 2015). Additionally, it enhances scalp circulation and reduces inflammation, supporting hair growth (Planta Medica, 2018).

Tocopherols and tocotrienols (Vitamin E) provide robust antioxidant protection, shielding skin from free radical damage (Food Chemistry, 2017) and protecting hair from UV and pollution-induced oxidative stress (Antioxidants, 2020). These compounds also strengthen hair by reducing protein loss (Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2017).

Ferulic acid, another antioxidant in Rice Bran Oil, helps brighten skin by inhibiting melanin production (Food Chemistry, 2017) and reduces redness and irritation with its anti-inflammatory properties (Molecules, 2018). It also offers mild UV protection (Photochemistry and Photobiology, 2015).

Phytosterols reduce skin inflammation and redness (Molecules, 2018) and hydrate the scalp, enhancing comfort and scalp health (Clinical, Cosmetic, and Investigational Dermatology, 2018). Squalene strengthens the skin barrier and enhances hydration (International Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2021).

Carotenoids support collagen production and promote skin repair, accelerating regeneration (Archives of Dermatological Research, 2020), and protect hair from oxidative stress (Antioxidants, 2020). Finally, phytic acid helps even skin tone and reduce dark spots by inhibiting melanin production (Food Chemistry, 2017).

Derived from the Salvia officinalis herb native to the Mediterranean, Sage Essential Oil is steam-distilled to produce a strong, sharp, warm, camphoraceous-herbaceous aroma. Its scent is often described as calming and grounding, contributing to its historical use in fougères, colognes, herbal notes, chypres, men’s fragrances, and sacred perfumes and incenses.

Scientific research supports many of the claimed benefits of Sage Essential Oil when applied topically, particularly its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which make it beneficial for soothing irritated skin and addressing minor skin infections (Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2013). For hair, monoterpenes in the oil help coat hair shafts, improving shine and reducing frizz (International Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2015).

While its traditional use for darkening hair and treating certain conditions is well-documented, these effects are typically mild and require consistent application alongside other care practices. Further studies are needed to comprehensively understand the extent of its benefits for hair and skin health.

Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) reacts with fats and oils to produce soap and glycerin, which are essential components for cleansing formulations. In this process, called saponification, the NaOH molecules bond with the oil to form a new compound (glycerin) such that no NaOH remain in the final soap product.

Additionally, in hair relaxers, sodium hydroxide serves as a chemical straightening agent by breaking the disulfide bonds in keratin, leading to hair relaxation. However, its use requires careful concentration control due to its caustic nature, which can cause irritation or damage if misused.

Spanish Marjoram (Thymus mastichina) Oil, also called Mastic Thyme Essential Oil, is steam distilled from the leaves and flowering tops of the Thymus mastichina herb and is used in skin and hair care products for primarily for its fresh, herbal-green, slightly spicy aroma.

Constituent ingredients include Citral, Cintronellol, Garaniol, Limonene, and Linalool which is similar to lemongrass oil, although this oil has a less than 1/100 the concentration of citral and roughly 10 times the amount of linalool. It possesses mild anti-inflammatory properties due to compounds like carvacrol, which can help calm irritated or inflamed skin, potentially reducing redness and swelling.

Research also supports its antimicrobial activity, potentially benefiting acne-prone skin, while its antioxidant power can protect skin cells from free radical damage; additionally, some studies indicate astringent qualities that may help tighten pores and regulate sebum production, although more research is needed in this area.

Sunflower seed oil is non-comedogenic, meaning it won't clog pores, and makes it moisturizing properties suitable for all skin types - including acne prone skin. Rich in antioxidant vitamins A, C, D, and E that help protect skin from stressors that can cause premature aging, this oil also contains high levels of linoleic acid and omega-6 fatty acids, which help nourish and protect the skin. While there is no scientific evidence that sunflower seed oil improves skin tone, there is evidence that the gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) component of this oil may help with eczema by improving skin barrier function and by reducing inflammation.

Rich in linoleic acid, sunflower seed oil strengthens the skin barrier and reduces transepidermal water loss, making it especially beneficial for individuals with conditions like atopic dermatitis (Lio; Stoia and Oancea). Additionally, it exhibits anti-inflammatory properties, helping to soothe irritated skin and promote overall skin comfort (Lio; Stoia and Oancea).

Sorbitan Oleate Glycerin is a plant derived mixture of the fatty acids from olive oil plus a dehydrated sugar known as sorbitol.

It is used primary to allow oil and water to be mixed without immediately seperating into distinct compounds. This results both in improved application and helping to stop the upper layer of the sking from drying out and losing water through a process known as transepidermal water loss (TEWL), which is basically the natural evaporation of water from the skin's outermost layer, the stratum corneum, into the surrounding air.

Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides) essential oil is primarily composed of sesquiterpenes, including khusimol, α-vetivone, and β-vetivone, which contribute to its distinctive aroma. The chemical composition varies based on cultivation conditions.
Skin Benefits:
  • Moisture Retention and Skin Barrier Support: While sesquiterpenes are generally known to support skin health, specific studies confirming vetiver oil's efficacy in moisture retention and skin barrier enhancement are limited.
  • Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Research indicates that β-sitosterol, a component found in various plant oils, can attenuate atopic dermatitis-like skin lesions through down-regulation of thymic stromal lymphopoietin (Han et al.). However, direct evidence linking vetiver oil to anti-inflammatory effects is limited.
  • Antioxidant Activity: Studies have shown that certain essential oils possess antioxidant properties (Nielsen et al.). However, specific evidence regarding vetiver oil's antioxidant activity is limited.
  • Wound Healing: While some essential oils are known to enhance collagen synthesis, direct evidence supporting vetiver oil's wound-healing properties is limited.
  • Antimicrobial Activity: Research has demonstrated that certain essential oils exhibit antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi (Nielsen et al.). However, specific studies on vetiver oil's antimicrobial efficacy are limited.
Hair and Scalp Benefits:
  • Oil Control and Scalp Health: Although vetiver oil is traditionally believed to have astringent and antimicrobial properties that may benefit oily scalps, scientific studies confirming these effects are limited.
  • Circulation Support: While some essential oils have been shown to enhance vascular function, direct evidence supporting vetiver oil's role in improving scalp circulation is limited.
Traditional Uses and Future Research:
Traditional applications suggest vetiver oil may have moisturizing and hair-strengthening effects. However, scientific validation of these claims is limited. Further research is necessary to substantiate the full range of therapeutic applications attributed to vetiver essential oil.

"Aqua" is the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI) name for pure distilled water, making up 60 to 85% of care creams and up to 95% of rinse-off products like shampoos and shower gels. The quality and purity of the water used can significantly influence a product's texture, stability, and overall performance. There's a myth that products listing "Aqua" are diluted or less effective, whereas water is often essential for product performance and user experience. To ensure consistency and safety it is important that a formulation always utilizes purified, demineralized water which is the overarching reason for the designation "Aqua".

Witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is used primarily for its astringent and antimicrobial properties. Its high tannin content contributes to its astringency, which can help tighten skin and reduce minor skin irritations when used in body mists. Additionally, the antimicrobial effects of witch hazel may aid in reducing bacteria on the skin's surface, promoting a cleaner feel. In linen and room sprays, these properties can contribute to a fresher environment.
